Goodbye Spider Veins

What are spider veins?

Spider veins and varicose veins are a common condition experienced by many women. Twice as many women as men are affected by spider veins and many factors contribute to this. Pregnancy, aging, and other health factors cause the formation and appearance of spider and varicose veins over time. These veins usually appear predominately in the legs but can show up near the feet or on the face. They are blue, rope or thread-like veins that are visible under the skin. They may also cluster and cause the skin to bulge.

Are they painful or harmful?

Typically, spider and varicose veins are not painful and do not cause any health complications. Under certain circumstances, they can become a health concern causing pain, swelling, cramps, or bleeding. Most women don’t experience any pain or discomfort with their varicose or spider veins; however, the appearance does concern many women and discourage them from wearing clothing that reveals their legs.

Is there a solution or treatment?

There are a few solutions out there when it comes to treating spider and varicose veins. A common home remedy for spider veins is to wear compression socks. This method of treatment promotes blood circulation that can help in preventing future spider veins and reduce the appearance of current ones. Compression socks can be a hassle to wear and the results aren’t particularly amazing. Other solutions include sclerotherapy or surgery. Sclerotherapy involves injections into the spider or varicose vein site and can be painful as the tissue becomes scar tissue. Surgery is performed in more extreme cases and is effective, but recovery can take up to a month.
